Start with the trip, not the product
The best category depends on your typical journey. Distance, whether you can pedal comfortably, where you will park and how much weather protection you need will point you toward one type quickly.
Electric bicycles
An e-bike suits riders who can pedal and want exercise plus assistance. It is the most flexible option for bike lanes and trails, and the easiest to store. Choose an e-bike if your trips are moderate, you want to ride recreationally as well as commute, and hills are the main thing holding you back.
Electric mopeds and scooters
Mopeds add a seat, more power and no pedalling. They carry more weight than an e-bike and suit longer commutes on roads. Expect higher speeds and the licensing or insurance obligations that come with a road going vehicle, which vary by classification.
E-kick scooters
Compact, light and ideal for short trips or the last stretch of a transit journey. They fold, which makes them easy to store in an apartment or carry onto a bus. They offer no weather protection and less stability on rough pavement.
Mobility scooters
Built for stability and comfort rather than speed, with a seat, three or four wheels and simple controls. Choose one if walking distance is the limiting factor. Open models are lighter and easier to transport, while enclosed models add a roof, doors, heating and wipers so you can keep riding through Ontario winters.
