What is an enclosed mobility scooter?
An enclosed mobility scooter is a fully covered electric vehicle built for low speed travel. Unlike an open mobility scooter, it has a roof, doors, windows and a windshield, which makes it usable through Ontario winters and rainy shoulder seasons. Most models seat one or two people and reach speeds around 32 km/h.
Range and battery: what the numbers really mean
Advertised range assumes flat ground, moderate temperatures and an average rider weight. The Eclipse EV Nova Lite, for example, is rated at up to 60 km from its 60V 58Ah battery. In practice, cold weather can reduce usable range noticeably, because battery chemistry becomes less efficient below freezing.
Three things affect your real world range more than anything else:
- Temperature. Expect shorter range in winter.
- Terrain. Hills draw far more current than flat streets.
- Tire pressure. Underinflated tires waste energy on every trip.
Features worth paying for
Weather protection is the reason most buyers choose an enclosed model, so look closely at how the cabin is equipped. Heating and fan ventilation keep the windshield clear and the cabin comfortable. Windshield wipers are essential, not optional, in Ontario rain. A backup camera makes tight parking far safer, and Bluetooth audio is a genuine quality of life feature on longer trips.
Ground clearance matters too. Around 120mm is enough to handle broken pavement and curb cuts without scraping.
Do you need a licence or insurance?
Rules depend on how the vehicle is classified and where you ride it. Requirements differ between sidewalks, bike lanes and roadways, and municipalities can apply their own bylaws. Confirm the classification of the specific model you are considering before you buy, and check your local bylaws. Our team can tell you how each model we sell is classified.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- Measure your storage space, including door width, and check the turning circle.
- Ask what the warranty covers and who performs the repairs.
- Confirm charging time. Many lead-acid packs need 8 to 10 hours.
- Sit in it. Legroom and visibility vary a lot between models.
